Big Sur isn’t a place you arrive at — it’s something you move through.
Leaving Carmel-by-the-Sea, the road begins to shift. Civilization slowly disappears behind you, replaced by cliffs, ocean and silence. Highway 1 hugs the coastline, sometimes so tightly it feels like you’re driving between two worlds — the Pacific on one side, raw mountains on the other.
Every curve reveals a new perspective. Sometimes it’s fog rolling in over the ocean. Sometimes it’s sunlight breaking through and lighting up the cliffs in gold.
We didn’t drive Big Sur to get somewhere. We drove it to experience what’s in between.
• Start early — traffic can build up quickly • Fuel up before entering Big Sur (no frequent gas stations) • Expect limited or no mobile signal • Road closures can happen (landslides are common) • Best driven north → south for ocean views • Bring offline maps or pre-downloaded routes • Sunrise and sunset offer the best light conditions
